Portlandia is a celebrated copper repoussé statue located above the entrance of the Portland Building in downtown Portland, Oregon. Created by sculptor Raymond Kaskey and installed in October 1985, Portlandia is the second-largest copper repoussé sculpture in the United States, surpassed only by the Statue of Liberty. Commissioned as part of the city’s Public Art Program under the “One Percent for Art” ordinance, the statue was inspired by the city seal, which depicts “Lady Commerce”—an allegorical figure representing Portland’s spirit and industry. The statue shows a classical woman, kneeling with a trident in her left hand and reaching down with her right, a gesture that invites visitors and symbolizes welcome and industriousness. Though crouched at 35 feet tall, if standing, Portlandia would reach about 50 feet in height and weighs approximately 6.5 tons.
