ODOT evicted everyone living underneath Route 99E in Portland, OR, then erected a permanent barricade to keep more homeless people from occupying. Oregon State spent taxpayer money on all the shiny metal to custom fit fencing along a stretch of the highway longer than a football field, but could not come up with the funding to facilitate the homeless getting linked up with proper services, permanent or transitional housing. Oregon has a humanitarian crisis on their hands, but are ill-equipped to deal with the problem in a way that benefits the most vulnerable. There are times on my many photo walks I encounter homeless people and honestly, it feels like living through The Great Depression. Homeless people desperately need help in Oregon and very few are there to save them.
