Redondo Beach Pier on a Saturday in January. It was a nice sunny day today, bringing people down to Redondo Beach. I wish Canon and other camera manufacturers would offer firmware upgrades with meaningful feature updates. At least for Canon users there is Magic Lantern. Today I turned on the Dual ISO module. ML directs the camera to take one shot where half the photo is ISO 100 and another is ISO 1600 for instance. The photo looks like it has scanlines before being processed in the cr2hdr app. Afterward, I brought the DNG created by the cr2hdr app into Camera Raw and process it further. The dynamic range is fantastic without having to postprocess in HDR. Often when putting shots of waves through a HDR process, ghosting is out of control resulting in strange fragments and noise. Dual ISO is a viable alternative to HDR, but the cr2hdr app is prone to create moire and noise in some instances so take multiple shots if you want to make sure you have a good one.
