Christmas morning is just like any other morning for the vagabonds roaming around the wilderness outside of Garberville, CA in Humboldt County. On Christmas Day the low was about freezing in the mountains. This man asked me for a quarter to make a phone call at the pay phone at the gas station. That was about the only business open this early in the morning on Christmas Day. A couple state troopers rolling through town, blue collar types driving their trucks through town, while travelers on U.S. 101 like us drop in for a few minutes. I just get these people, even the hobos who want to live off the land. They seem to be good people, happy, probably happier than most of the people getting presents this Christmas morning.
